Student Safety Concern: Parental Attention to 13 Reasons Why

Dear GCPS Parents/Guardians:

The school system wants to bring your attention to a Netflix series called "13 Reasons Why".  The series is based on a novel written for young adults in which a fictional 17-year-old girl makes audio tapes explaining what each person in her life has done to hurt her and cause her to take her own life. The series graphically depicts the themes of bullying, rape, and suicide, as well as consequences for those who do not intervene.

The school system is not recommending nor encouraging students to watch the series, however, it has come to our attention locally and nationally that many students are watching.   Please be aware that Netflix can be accessed on any electronic device, including many cell phones. The series is not intended for anyone under the age of 17

To help keep students safe, on the Pupil Services webpage (https://garrettcountyschools.org/pupil-services), there are suggestions that have been developed by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voice of Education), and JED Foundation.

Please contact your school’s counselor should you have any further questions or concerns about your child as related to this series. If you do have concerns about your child and suicide, contact your school counselor, a mental health therapist or psychologist, or for an emergency call 911.
