Mentor Program for New Teachers

With the hope to provide the best support possible for our new, non-tenure teachers, we have made a few changes to our mentor program.  Mentors, please review these changes.

  • Mentors will be given two ½ day substitutes to do a non-evaluative observation of his/her mentee one time during the first semester of the school year and one time during the second semester.  (The building will be responsible for securing substitutes.  The mentor must complete a professional leave form and submit it to Bonnie Edwards at the BOE at least one week in advance.  Please see a partially filled out PLF in the attachment section below).
  • Within one week of the observation (both in the fall and spring), the mentor will meet with the mentee to discuss the observation and discuss successes and areas for improvement.
  • The mentee will be given two ½ day substitutes to visit his/her mentor’s classroom one time during the first semester of the school year and one time during the second semester in order for the mentor to be able to model successful teaching to his/her mentee.  (The building will be responsible for securing substitutes.  The mentor must complete a professional leave form for his/her mentee and submit it to Bonnie Edwards at the BOE at least one week in advance).
  • Within one week of the classroom visit (both in the fall and spring), the mentor and the mentee will meet and discuss best practices that were used by the mentor.
  • The mentor time sheets have been updated.  The mentor is required to meet with their mentee for at least 40 minutes per week.  Mentors that submit their time sheet that do not indicate meeting the time requirement will not receive their stipend for that quarter.  A sample of the new time sheet is attached.
  • New teachers starting this school year will be required to have a mentor for at least the first three years.
