GCPS 2025-26 Teacher of the Year
Mrs. Laura Witt, a second-grade teacher at Broad Ford School, was recognized for being named the 2025-26 Garrett County Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Witt will compete for the Maryland State Teacher of the Year award, which should be announced in October.

Garrett County Public Schools - MD Rated 4 Stars
GCPS has received updated report card data, star ratings, and informational resources for the 2023-24 school year from MSDE. The results for this year have returned to usual testing standards, setting the new baseline for Maryland Public Schools. As such, GCPS has experienced a slight change in our school’s star ratings, along with the rest of the state. Collectively, GCPS earned an average of 4 stars.

GCPS proudly announces that Northern Middle School received multiple honors at the 2025 Maryland History Day competition, held this past weekend at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Students and staff were recognized with three prestigious awards.

Due to high water issues and the voluntary evacuation in place, Route 40 Elementary will be closed today, Wednesday, May 14, 2025. Buses that serve the Route 40 District will not operate today – buses 12, 15, 20, 19, 84, 11, and 68. Additionally, bus 34 will not run the Savage River portion of its route. Route 40 staff are to report to Grantsville Elementary today.

The Garrett County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Northern Middle School in the Cafeteria. The meeting is open to the public and will be live-streamed for public review.
